Bulk Updating Tickets in Zendesk

Clearing a backlog by hand is how weekends disappear. Bulk actions from a view do it in one pass.

The bulk update flow

1

Build a view that isolates the tickets

Filter tightly. The safest bulk update is one where every ticket in the view genuinely deserves the same change.

2

Select the tickets

Tick the header checkbox to take everything on the page, or select individually. Zendesk caps how many you can update in one action, so work through in batches.

3

Edit and submit

Set assignee, group, status, tags or a public comment, then submit. The update is applied as a background job, so a large batch takes a moment to finish.

What bulk update won't do

It will not merge. Merging is one ticket into one ticket, and there is no bulk equivalent, which is exactly why teams end up merging duplicates one at a time and eventually stop bothering.

It will also not undo. A bulk comment on the wrong view is a bulk apology, so build the view, check the count, then submit.

Frequently asked questions

Does merging in Zendesk lose the customer replies?+

No. Ticket Merger uses the native Zendesk merge, so the conversation, attachments and audit history move onto the surviving ticket. The duplicate is closed with a note pointing at the original.

Can I review merges before they happen?+

Yes. Start in suggest-only mode: Ticket Merger flags the pairs it believes are duplicates and leaves the decision to an agent. Most teams run that way for a week, check the hit rate, then let the confident matches merge on their own.

What stops it merging two tickets that are not the same?+

Rules you set. Match on requester, subject similarity, body similarity and a time window, and exclude anything you want left alone, like tickets from a specific form, group or tag. Anything below your confidence threshold gets suggested rather than merged.

How long does setup take?+

About five minutes to connect, and the first scan of your open queue runs immediately after. Onboarding help is included on every plan.

The backlog is smaller than you think

A slice of every backlog is duplicates. Merge those automatically and the pile shrinks without a single bulk action.
